A photograph is only as powerful as the subject. -Professional Portrait Photographer (stockton,ca)

With a wedding fast approaching, i have been doing much hard work and thinking. Never having done a wedding professionally before, there is much to learn and study. Even though, I am not the least bit doubtful of my skill and passion which will in turn produce a lifetime of memories for the beautiful couple that is soon to be wedded. While I was watching a video on lighting techniques, posing, etc for weddings...the photographer said something that I have and will forever express to my clients. He said, "A photograph is only as good as the client". I tell my clients all of the time to show me who you are. My take on that photographer's phrase is "A photograph is only as powerful as the subject", meaning that my subject, which in this case is a loving couple, is going to be my focus and source of...UMMMPH(power)....in the photo. You will be looking at them! It is extremely important that my couples rather just meeting, engaged, or just getting married; to SHOW their love for one another. Be WILLING to express yourself no matter what is asked of you. I completely understand the awkwardness of having a stranger all of a sudden in your face with a camera begging for you two to, "kiss", "again", "one more time", "and again", "here let me get closer", "hold that"..lol...it IS awkward! To top it off you will probably be wondering, "how is this even going to look", "this seems stupid", "people are staring", "flashes??!?". As I always tell my clients, just either think of me as not there; as hard as it is. Get lost in your loved one's eyes. Forget about everything. Or if all else fails, I hope that all my clients can get to know me well enough to feel as if I am a friend. Usually when my clients talk to me more on a personal level, they are extremely comfortable when their session day arrives. A photo IS only as powerful as the subject is. So BE unique, be powerful, be YOU!
If I took a photo of two couples just holding hands....it would be nice. If I took a photo of two couples holding hands and gazing into each others eyes...powerful..emotional...you can see and read what's going on. It's almost like a movie. A bad actor....makes a bad movie in most cases. A great actor (in this case there should not be any acting ladies and gents)....great acting makes moving and award winning stories that are forever told! Let's make THAT PHOTOGRAPH! That memory. It's your life...just as a photo which will become a memory to look back on.

I am so excited and thrilled for the wedding and can not wait to capture breath taking moments of this beautiful couple's love. I hope that you two can open up to me, and allow myself and the world see MORE of that special something that you two have for one another.

Merry Christmas to everyone. After the holidays I will be back with those wedding photos and the amazing story that I am sure will follow.

  1. So true Alica! Being modest, it was hard to give the hubby smooches while your snapping pictures but they are some of my favorite photographs you took of us! :)
