It all started with trying to get both kids to sleep as we all lie awake in my bed. Above my bed I have a collage of frames which I had just filled with photos of my family early in the day. "How beautiful and special. These photos are not "professional studio type" but wow, I love them", I thought to myself as the kids continued to fuss and reject the idea of sleep. What a great thought! To have photos all over my home that completely represent the love of my family and each individual personality; that's priceless! How do I give my client's THIS? I've always envisioned letting my clients be natural, relaxed, and in their own environment but as my career progressed and continues to progress, my clients constantly ask for studio. "I absolutely love the photo of the baby with the hats, and the one with the baby's hands on her/his cheeks. Can we do that one? Oh, and this one?", they always come to me with these types of requests. I hate to turn down a clients' desire for their photos, but at the same time I don't like being limited to any certain type of shots. I feel as if my photography is and should be EXACTLY what the person/subject is but captured in an artist, creative, and professional manor. I want my sessions to start being how they should be. I'm thinking divide the sessions into threes (or otherwise requested by the client). The first session will be something fun, special like the subject going to a park or somewhere fun and unique. This will allow me to capture unique locations, outside subjects, textures, etc. This will define the subject more uniquely. The second session will be something more comfortable, in the subjects home or place of relaxation. This will allow me to capture those sweet, quiet, personal moments that define the subject. The third session will be a studio set-up. This will allow me to capture the client's exact want or desire for a specific shot they have in mind while also providing the client with professional studio portraits. Sounds like a lot. Sounds a tad confusing. But here is my theory on all of this.....if the subject can be captured in a honest and true manor that is specifically unique to each individual, you will truly be able to forever cherish each and every moment. Simple moments in an individual's life are the most precious and overlooked; these are the moments that you never get back. Sure you can remake them, but IN THE MOMENT is a memory and capturing that is worth everything! Looking at my collage of photos, I think to myself, "when this shot was taken I thought nothing of it. I NEVER planned on printing it and framing it. I honestly didn't even know the power it held within it's sweetness, until I look back on it today I see my beautiful family and the love that we have for one another."
I want you to experience this. I want everyone's thoughts on this! What would you expect to pay for this type of experience; honestly!? What sort of time frame would be reasonable for this type of experience?
Here is a shot of both of the collages I have in my home. You see that most are of very innocent, unposed moments.......or you might actually think that A LOT are posed but about 90% are not posed and are just IN THE MOMENT shots. Enjoy and again SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS!
Also wanted to share a few candid moments that I also decided to capture to show you that nothing has to be a "professional studio" set-up in order to get beautiful PRECIOUS moments.
